Thermo Scientific announces a new educational webinar, “Comprehensive Anti-doping Detection using the Q Exactive Orbitrap MS for Equine Urine Analysis,” featuring Dr. Scott D Stanley, PhD, Professor at University of California–Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. The webinar will be presented live October 16, 2014 at 8:00AM PT.
Equine anti-doping analysis is a changing and dynamic field of science. The constant introduction of new drugs and biopharmaceuticals present challenges to the integrity of sports. Anti-doping programs are continually falling under fire due to allegations of perceived doping by athletes with drugs that are rumored to be undetectable by the current testing schemes which in some cases offer limited drug coverage.
The continual advancements of modern mass spectrometry have enabled anti-doping laboratories to significantly expand the drug coverage for both human and equine athletes. Both the benchtop Thermo Scientific™ Exactive™ and the Thermo Scientific™ Q Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometers have been used by the K.L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratories at UC Davis for the past six years.
Dr. Scott Stanley will discuss key learning objectives of drug analysis, such as expanded drug coverage for anti-doping labs; Detection of both small and large molecules in a single analytical run; Detection of > 600 compounds, including phase I and phase II drug metabolites; and Analysis of >100 samples per instrument per day.
For the past 21 years, Dr. Stanley has worked nationally and internationally in the fields of equine pharmacology, analytical chemistry and drug detection. He is the Principal Chemist at the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, California’s Official Drug Testing Laboratory for all racing horse events. Dr. Stanley maintains an active analytical chemistry research laboratory involved in the steroid profiling methods, and investigation of veterinary drugs produced by veterinary compounding pharmacies. Since opening in 2000, the K.L. Maddy Laboratory has established itself as one of the largest and most respected Anti-Doping and Equine Pharmacology Research programs.
